Sheridan Intermediate Students Win at The Stock Market Game
Sheridan Intermediate students Thatcher Allen, Riley Raymick, Kendal Soapes and Avery Williams placed first in their region in a virtual stock market competition hosted by Economics Arkansas. The team was awarded a trophy and $125 on Jan. 10 at an awards luncheon in Verizon Arena.
The game is a 12-week online simulation that allows students to expand their knowledge about the stock market and economy all while enhancing their teamwork and technology skills.
“The stock market game is a proven tool that engages my students in technology, literacy, math, and economics in the midst of real world current events,” said Sherri DeSoto, their Gifted and Talented Facilitator. “The real takeaway is introducing my students to personal finance and investment strategies at a young age.”
By participating in the actual competition and playing the simulation in the classroom, the students are able to gain knowledge that will be immensely helpful later in life.
“My teacher isn’t teaching us for now, she is teaching us for the year we graduate and beyond,” said Avery Williams, a competitor at the game. “The stock market game teaches us for later by teaching us about the economy and how stocks work.”
The stock market game is not only challenging, but is also exciting and fun for the students.
“Playing the stock market game was crazy, because we didn't know what would happen,” said Williams.
Another competitor, Thatcher Allen, enjoyed the competitiveness that the game instills. He said, “It’s fun to win!”
DeSoto plans on continuing to use this great tool and hopes that future students can learn from the game and live up to the high standards placed by the regional champions.
