The Grant County 4-H/Sheridan Schools Seaperch Robotics teams had an outstanding showing at international competition held May 31-June 1 at the University of Maryland. Grant County's Vanguard team placed second in the world in the high school stock class! Additionally, two other Grant County teams had excellent showings as the Aquanauts placed sixth overall in the open class, and the Wet Willies were 25th in the middle school stock class. Over 3,000 teams participated in Seaperch competitions worldwide this year with 170 teams from 23 states and six countries advancing to the international level. The Grant County teams earned to right to compete at the international competition by winning the state 4-H Seaperch Challenge, which is a regional qualifying contest.
The Grant County kids interacted with students from countries such as China and Egypt and saw teams from New Zealand and Puerto Rico. SMS teacher Tina Melton, SIS teacher Serena McGinley, and Brad McGinley, county extension agent with the UA Division of Agriculture, work together to coach the Seaperch teams. Serena McGinley helps with the intermediate and high school teams. Tina Melton assists the middle school students. After the state competition is concluded, they all work together with the teams.
“To place second, sixth and 25th in the world at anything is a great achievement,” said Brad McGinley. “We just wanted these kids to get the recognition they deserved. It takes hours and hours of work to get everything just perfect and right to compete at that level. Not only was this a great robotics and engineering competition, but a great cultural experience.”
In addition to the team photo, the second photo shows Grant County Seaperch contestants visiting with a team from China.
